SECTION / 01

Metadata embedded in photographs

A photograph may contain capture date, camera and lens information, exposure settings, dimensions and GPS coordinates. Presence varies by file, camera and editing history. Photo Archive Rescue reads available fields; missing metadata is not automatically damage.

SECTION / 02

Nikon RAW evidence

NEF and NRW files may contain Nikon-specific camera information in addition to common EXIF fields. Preserve the RAW file itself even when the application does not display every manufacturer-specific field.

SECTION / 03

Captions, keywords and sidecars

IPTC or XMP information may be embedded or stored in sidecars. Keep unrecognised non-media files with the export until their purpose is understood, even when the application does not display every field.

SECTION / 04

Information that may be service-only

Albums, boxes, online tags, sharing settings, comments or service-generated organisation may not be embedded in the original media. Their survival can only be established from real export evidence or Nikon documentation.

SECTION / 05

Safe metadata handling

Keep the source unchanged, inventory fields before reorganising, preserve sidecars beside related files and distinguish embedded capture time from Windows created or modified dates. Where evidence conflicts, surface the conflict for review.
