Establish what you expected

Record the album counts and visible organisation still available in the normal service. Treat these as observations with a date, not automatically as a count of unique downloadable files.

Choose several irreplaceable photographs and record a filename, thumbnail reference, capture date or other detail that will help trace them later.

Check every delivered download

Keep every ZIP part together under its original name. Confirm that each expected download completed and has a non-zero size before extracting each archive into its own working folder.

Windows can extract ordinary ZIP files, but unusual or multipart archives may need a compatible archive tool. A successful extraction still does not establish that Nikon supplied every expected item.

SECTION / 03

Count files, not just thumbnails

Thumbnail views can omit unsupported, hidden or non-image entries. Inventory files by extension and count JPEG, NEF, NRW, videos, sidecars and other items explicitly.

Compare counts carefully. Album totals can overlap if one photograph appears in several albums, and service-only objects may not correspond one-for-one with files.

SECTION / 04

Trace a specific missing photograph

Search extracted folders, every supplied ZIP and older local sources using more than the filename when possible. Compare dimensions, capture dates and content; familiar camera names can repeat.

Check camera cards, earlier imports, external drives and prior backups. Preserve any reduced-size copy while looking for a better surviving original.

SECTION / 05

Understand what verification proves

A matching SHA-256 result proves that a destination copy is byte-for-byte equal to the supplied source item. It does not prove that Nikon’s export contained every photograph once stored online.

Keep the distinction visible: transfer verification protects the rescue copy; account completeness requires evidence from the service and your own records.
