How to back up NIKON IMAGE SPACE photographs to an external drive.

Plan space for the whole workflow

Check free space on the computer and destination drive before starting. ZIP files, extracted working files and the final organised copy can coexist during a cautious rescue, so the peak requirement may exceed the apparent download size.

Use a healthy drive with a file system suitable for the sizes you expect. Do not reformat a drive containing wanted data as part of this workflow.

SECTION / 02

Preserve Nikon’s supplied source

Keep every original ZIP unchanged and retain its original name. Extract into a separate working location and do not reorganise inside the source archive.

Record when and where the download came from. These notes establish provenance; they do not prove that the cloud account export was complete.

Separate originals, working files and notes

A simple structure makes each role visible. The folder names below are an example rather than a claim about Nikon’s export layout.

Copy without overwriting conflicts

Copy to a new destination folder. If a filename already exists, preserve both until content comparison establishes whether they are identical. A name collision is not proof of a duplicate.

Keep RAW files, JPEG derivatives, videos and sidecars unless their relationship has been understood.

SECTION / 05

Verify, restore-test and keep another copy

Check that every expected destination item exists with the expected size and matching SHA-256 fingerprint. Then open a representative sample directly from the external drive, including RAW and video where applicable.

The Library of Congress recommends multiple copies in separate places and checking them over time. One external drive beside the computer is not a complete preservation strategy.
